Abstract Scope |
Abnormal grain growth (AGG) and porosity can lead to uncontrolled microstructural heterogeneity and reduced structural performance in ceramics. AGG in impure alumina is particularly well documented. However, few investigations have experimentally examined the relationship between AGG and porosity. Preliminary work for this study suggested that isolated pores that are much larger than the average grain size considerably alter abnormal grain growth behavior. This behavior differs from published investigations showing abnormal grain growth in widespread, often interconnected, general porosity. This work investigates the role of intentionally induced, large, isolated pores on abnormal grain growth behavior in calcia doped alumina. |
