Abstract Scope |
It is important to investigate the mechanical properties of grains and grain boundaries in 8mol% Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 (8YSZ) ceramics, because the thickness of 8YSZ electrolyte in SOFCs is around ~10 µm which equal to size of grains and grain boundaries. In this study, the mechanical properties of single crystals and bicrystals, which are ideal grains and grain boundaries, were measured using microcantilever beam specimens. Crystal orientation dependence of bending strength of the single crystal 8YSZ showed the same tendency as that of Young’s modulus. Yield stress also showed crystal orientation dependence, which was explained by considering the critical resolved shear stresses in the primary and secondary slip systems of 8YSZ. On the other hand, the average grain boundary strength of the bicrystals was found to be 5.6 ± 0.8 GPa, which was approximately 45% lower than that of single crystals with the same longitudinal direction as the bicrystals. |
