Abstract Scope |
TEMs have imaged dislocations and their dynamics for a long time, but uncertainties persist as to how those dynamics translate to subsurface dynamics. In particular, significant uncertainties arise in understanding the dynamics of deep subsurface dislocations under different types of in-situ and operando loading conditions. I will present my group’s research developing X-ray diffraction imaging tools to directly image defects in crystalline materials, resolving their motion over ms-fs timescales hundreds of μm beneath the surface. This will include our work studying the interaction of high-rate compressive waves at amplitudes ranging from acoustic waves to strong shock waves that deform or shatter crystalline materials. I will present some of our results that inform important multiscale structural dynamics relevant to mechanics and thermal engineering. |
