The interface-dominated thermodynamics and kinetics are sensitive to the structure of the solid-state interfaces. This study revisits coherent interfaces in the essential materials class of superalloys where precipitates have a cubic crystal structure that matches the matrix's orientation. Using atomistic simulations, we investigate the origin of the interface energy anisotropy of commensurable crystals with particular emphasis on the emerging interface structure in low symmetry plane orientation and associated interface energy anisotropy for the whole orientation space. Unlike previous models on interface energy anisotropy, this study reveals that the orientation dependence can be accurately modelled with a finite set of non-interacting interface structure constituents and provides a structural framework to model coherent interfaces with curved interfaces, which are often observed in thin film deposition processes and early solid-state precipitation stages. |
