Abstract Scope |
8000 series foil alloys, cast by TRC, have many application areas such as finstock and packaging. The primary alloying elements in 8000 series are Fe, Mn, and Si. These elements exhibit varying dissolution rates and solubilities in aluminum, resulting in the formation of intermetallic phases with diverse stoichiometries depending on solidification conditions. Coarse intermetallic formations also occur based on element ratios and solidification rates in 8000 series alloys, which can lead to issues like cracking and tearing in final foil products.
This study investigates Al-Fe-Mn intermetallics formed in the 8000 series alloy under different solidification conditions. Metal samples taken from free solidification zones are re-melted and solidified under different conditions. Then, optical microscopy and SEM-EDS analysis are used to investigate the formations within the solidified samples. Thus, it is aimed to observe the implications of intermetallic formation during free solidification and its reintegration into the liquid metal phase during casting. |
