Symposium An Atoms to Autos Approach for Materials Innovations for Lightweighting: An LMD Symposium in Honor of Anil K. Sachdev
Presentation Title Nanoindentation as One of the Multiscale Mechanical Characterization Tools for Developing Materials for Automotive Applications
Author(s) Yang Cheng
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Yang Cheng
Abstract Scope In the late 1980s, Dr. Anil Sachdev, one of the leaders in the Metallurgy Department at GMR, recognized the importance of multiscale characterization of the mechanical behavior of materials. Indeed, his group acquired one of the first nanoindentation systems, a Nanoindenter II from Nano Instruments. Soon afterwards, GMR purchased a Hysitron device and a high-temperature micro- and nano-indentation system from Micro Materials. These systems have been used for developing lightweight alloys and surface engineering at GM R&D Center. In this presentation, I will provide several examples of indentation studies of materials for automotive applications, including coatings to overcome contact fatigue of gears, for electrical connectors, and for dry machining, as well as more recent work on developing materials used in lithium-ion batteries and beyond. These examples help highlight the impact of Dr. Sachdev’s vision on “An Atoms to Autos Approach” to materials Innovations for automotive applications.
