Abstract Scope |
For decades, use of refractory niobium alloys has been dominated by ATI C103TM for its combination of relatively low density, high melting point, and fabricability. However, increasing requirements from emerging aerospace applications alongside advancements in powder metallurgy and additive manufacturing have created an environment in which new, higher performance refractory alloys are both possible and necessary. A critical review of historical refractory alloy development has been conducted with the intent of uncovering promising avenues of research for a new generation of refractory materials. Thoughts on classification of niobium alloys and promising directions for enhanced performance will be presented with examples from the historical literature. |
