Abstract Scope |
Various additions of lignocellulosic fibers in cement mortars have been studied. These fibers make mortars more eco-friendly and mitigate shrinkage problems. One of the main problems involving the application of these materials is the high water absorption, which can be mitigated with chemical treatments. This work aims to investigate the impact of treating natural fibers from pineapple with tannic acid at concentrations of 2.5%, 5% and 0% (without treatment). X-ray diffractions were performed from which the crystallinity indices were calculated. To study wettability, the contact angles of the samples were determined. There was an increase in crystallinity in the treated fibers. The angles obtained were greater in the treated fibers, pointing to a lower affinity with water. Therefore, it is concluded that tannic acid can enable the use of lignocellulosic fibers as a reinforcement phase of cementitious mortars, from the perspective of reducing water absorption. |
