Abstract Scope |
MAR-M247, a nickel-based superalloy, is known for its exceptional mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. However, its poor printability, due to severe cracking, limits the integration of additive manufacturing (AM) advantages such as design flexibility and cost efficiency. Despite the difficulty, a successful fabrication of the superalloy with a high relative density (>99.5%) was achieved using electron-beam powder-bed fusion (E-PBF) with pre-heating at 1100 °C. Secondary electron microscopy (SEM) with electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results revealed a significant decrease in residual stress thanks to pre-heating prevented the cracking. The E-PBF superalloy exhibited excellent tensile properties; yield stress exceeded 820 MPa and 630 MPa at room and elevated temperature (870 °C), respectively. Atom probe tomography (APT) analysis revealed a high volume fraction of γ' (72%) and the presence of fine nano-sized secondary γ' precipitates near grain boundaries contributed to the outstanding mechanical properties. |
