Abstract Scope |
Additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) has been used in research for a wide variety of materials. While materials such as aluminum are moving forward with large scale demonstrations, steels and stainless steels have primarily been limited to basic research due to insufficient tool life. Friction stir welding has successfully used polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) as a tool material that has sufficient tool life for industrial applications in stainless steel; however, insufficient tool cooling in the current AFSD tool holders have limited the use of PCBN tooling for AFSD. An integration of a MegaStir Liquid-Cooled Tool Holder with a MELD L3 machine has been designed and is being tested. The increased cooling capabilities of the toolholder will allow for PCBN tooling to be used for AFSD, and will be evaluated specifically for larger builds with stainless steels. |
