Abstract Scope |
Global demand for lithium-ion batteries is growing as the world transitions to clean and green energy systems. However, the battery materials, which also have supply issues due to geological location and scarcity, are environmentally hazardous and toxic to human health and therefore require full valorisation. This work investigates the pilot scale hydrometallurgical process for the efficient recovery of lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese and graphite from end-of-life NMC black mass. The process developed in the laboratory is demonstrated at pilot scale with comparable results. Battery grade metals are produced by solvent extraction and crystallisation for the resynthesis of cathode active materials. The successful implementation of the pilot scale hydrometallurgical process indicates promising industrial opportunities for the supply of critical battery materials. This will reduce dependence on primary resources and promote circular economy practices and sustainable production of next generation lithium-ion batteries. |
