Freckles and other associated macro-segregation defects have been a topic of interest for a variety of casting methods. One of the key challenges to capture the effect of freckles via numerical simulations is to get the reasonably accurate macrosegregation patterns, and the relative fluid motions so that such regions can be identified via predictive modelling. In this work, we propose a framework to capture a multi-component simulation of a dynamically evolving vacuum arc remelting (VAR) ingot, by incorporating non-linear, multi-component phase diagrams into consideration. The simulations were performed using dynamically meshed domain using ANSYS FluentŪ. Custom solvers were used to capture the non-linear phase diagram relationships. The results are validated for known binary systems and eventually extended to non-dilute, multi-component alloy compositions. The results show clear occurrence of rising and settling convective patterns, that are likely to cause freckling. |
