Abstract Scope |
Powder reuse in laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing processes can lead to defects including particle spatter, partial melting, morphological changes, volatilization/composition changes, oxidation, among others. These defects can subsequently affect powder flowability during the recoating process and can eventually lead to a degradation in component performance. To recondition powder, we propose a novel etching process amenable to all materials that removes surface oxides of reused powder. With proper parameter development, we will show that adequate etching rates can be achieved to enable the process to be scalable. Furthermore, the process does not induce subsequent defects that could affect properties. Finally, we will powder flowability properties and chemistry of virgin powder, reused powder, and reconditioned powder. |
