Abstract Scope |
Based on principles of thermodynamics and electrodynamics, this paper reviews a unified phenomenological comprehension on non-thermal microwave effects (NTME) occurring in microwave-assisted materials processing. NTME, initiated by applied resonant microwave-fields, are isothermal augmentative effects on process thermodynamics and kinetics. In thermally-unstable matter syntheses – vitrification of crystalline solids detected below “normal” melting-temperatures, NTME results from a field-induced stability-reversal of thermodynamic states occurring in a microwave-irradiated system. On the other hand, NTME in kinetics-enhancements of various microwave-processes are understood, respectively as: (1) field-initiated diffusion activation-energy reduction occurring during isothermal sintering and related processes inside uniformly microwave-irradiated bodies; (2) driving-force augmentation created by local microwave-field amplification occurring in mass transfer of certain ionic polycrystals that possess “microwave-field-inhomogeneous” microstructures; (3) reduction in reaction activation-enthalpy caused by reactant-enthalpy augmentation occurring in isothermal microwave-enhanced chemical syntheses. Unified comprehension on NTME presented above is fully verified by relevant M&P data documented in the industry. |
