Abstract Scope |
We used the calorimetry and magnetization capabilities of a PPMS system by Quantum Design for measurements on LaFe11.5-xCoxSi1.5 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.5) prepared by suction casting and annealing to obtain the τ1 phase. We confirmed a linear relationship between Curie transition temperature (TC) and Co concentration, ranging from 200 K (x=0) to a maximum of 360 K (x=1.5). Samples with a small amount (<10%) of substituted Co showed a reduction in isothermal entropy change peak values, but maintained or slightly increased their refrigerant capacity (RC) with increasing Co concentration. This TC-tuning ability and conserved RC could potentially enable room temperature applications. Heat capacity and isofield magnetization curves suggest that the maintained/improved RC may be due to a change from a first-order to a second-order magnetic transition. This may reduce the hysteretic losses, improving refrigerator efficiency. Investigations on Ni substitutions for Co in LaFe11.5-x-yCoxNiySi1.5 alloys are underway. |
