Abstract Scope |
High pressure hydrogen facing materials pose a special challenge to characterisation methods as they require exposure to high pressure conditions to exhibit the behaviour observed in service. In this talk we will present a suite of new methods in our lab at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg that for the testing of materials exposed to high pressure hydrogen. This includes mechanical testing, materials analytics and microstructural characterisation down to the atomic level. Highlights include a high pressure/temperature hydrogen and deuterium autoclave system up to 1000bar/300°C, a novel UHV thermal desorption system with improved dynamics, and a hydrogen background free atom probe for direct imaging of hydrogen down to the atomic scale. This, together with further developments allows for a full materials development cycle for high pressure hydrogen facing materials. Examples in this presentation will include wear resistant hydrogen barrier coatings as well as a novel type of C based austenitic steel. |
