Abstract Scope |
A fundamental understanding of phase transformations has been pivotal for the design of structural alloys underpinning the development of humans. Additive manufacturing (AM) has enhanced the performance range of existing alloys by enabling novel designs. For example, conformal cooling channels have improved the efficiency of tools for die casting and injection molding even with existing alloys. However, the rapid thermal cycles, especially in fusion-based AM, result in metastable phase transformations that give rise to unique microstructures. These metastable phase transformations can enhance some material properties while having the opposite impact on the others and are highly dependent on the alloy chemistry. Therefore, the liquid→solid and subsequent solid-state phase transformations will be the focus of this presentation. Examples from different alloys will be used to discuss specific aspects of phase transformations during AM. The importance of phase transformations in governing alloy chemistry and specifications will also be discussed. |
