Abstract Scope |
Process parameter selection for laser powder-feed direct energy deposition (DED-LP) can be guided with process maps in power and scan velocity space. Current models do not account for powder flow rate or predict powder capture efficiency while experimental methods take significant time and effort. A relatively simple yet effective model is needed for quick prediction of process parameters. A simple analytical model is proposed accounting for laser beam, powder flow stream and melt pool geometry that predicts process parameters and capture efficiency for given deposition parameters. The model is validated through different material systems and processing parameter space. The model ‘s capability of quickly predicting powder capture efficiency with comparison to experimental data will be presented. |
