Abstract Scope |
NiCoMnTi alloys, as all-d-metal Metamagnetic Shape Memory Alloys (MMSMAs), are emerging as a potential replacement for NiCoMn(In,Ga) type MMSMAs owing to the improved mechanical properties and lower costs while possessing promising martensitic transformation (MT) characteristics. This study explores tailoring MT through composition and microstructure control. It was shown that varying heat treatment conditions significantly modify the MT behavior of NiCoMnTi alloys, leading to hundreds of degree changes in MT temperatures and hysteresis by the formation of Ni-rich precipitates. To investigate the competition between the possible ordered phases, A2 and B2, techniques such as transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction were utilized. The results will be discussed considering the roles of local chemistry, microstructural length scales, and the presence of order domains on MT characteristics. Altogether, the dependence of MT on thermal processing makes NiCoMnTi MMSMAs promising candidates for versatile SMA applications such as magnetically driven actuation or solid-state refrigeration. |
