Abstract Scope |
Rare Earth magnets are essential to clean energy technologies; however, critical materials and manufacturing challenges need to be addressed to meet the increasing demand for these advanced magnets. For example, new alloys with decreased Nd, Pr, and Dy contents must be compatible with commercially relevant bulk synthesis. Furthermore, variability in magnetic properties of bulk samples must be minimized to meet performance requirements and maximize use of critical materials. We are enabling the transition from discovery, development, and prototyping of advanced magnet alloys by bridging lab-scale (< 100 g) rapid synthesis with commercially relevant, pilot-scale ( > 1 kg) synthesis. Here we present developing Nd-lean magnet alloys that can be synthesized in bulk shapes using different manufacturing techniques. We show for both Nd-lean and conventional Nd-based alloys, the magnetic properties obtained via carefully controlled lab-scale synthesis can be scaled up to the pilot-scale without degrading the magnetic properties. |
