Abstract Scope |
Decarbonization of steel manufacture through the elimination of fossil fuel dependence will require the adoption of new technologies that are cost competitive with today’s carbon and natural gas-based ore reduction and heating processes. Today, fossil fuels are employed throughout the steel manufacturing process for ore processing and sintering and pelletizing, process gas heating, ore reduction, vessel preheating, cast section reheating, annealing, coating, and drying. Potential approaches to the electrification of these steelmaking processes is the focus of this presentation and the new steel electrification testbed that is part of DOE's 7th Clean Energy Manufacturing Innovation Institute, EPIXC (Electrified Processes for Industry without Carbon). |
