Abstract Scope |
Recent theoretical research has led to new coloration methods for metallic materials, particularly through surface treatments. These treatments, while widely used and optimized, suffer from the drawback of the colored layer being easily damaged by external influences and chemical reactions. To address this, we developed color alloys by selecting intermetallic compounds or solid solutions with inherent unique colors. In solid-solution alloys, the colors result from optical transition energies in the visible light spectrum, controlled by alloy composition. However, alloy design limitations restrict the color range. This study aimed to control optical properties without altering alloy composition. We applied cold rolling and annealing processes to Cu-Al-Zn-Sn Color alloys for altering their microstructure. We focused on defects in Cu-based alloys with low stacking fault energy during plastic deformation and heat treatment, inducing these defects. As a result, we investigated the relationship between optical properties and the modified microstructure. |
