Abstract Scope |
My initial research on slag-gas-metal reactions elucidated the key role electrochemistry plays in controlling interfacial reactions and transport of charged species through phases. While studying deoxidation, desulfurization, and decarburization processes in steelmaking my contributions were also based on the realization that these processes are influenced by electrochemical reactions involving liquid ionic (slag) and electronic (metal) phases. My research on electrochemical vapor deposition of oxide electrolyte and interconnect films on SOFC (solid oxide fuel cell) electrodes showed for the first time that oxygen transport during deposition was controlled by minority charge carriers. My research activities involved studying electrochemical reactions in metals processing and SOECs, and I have successfully combined the two by developing the environmentally friendly solid oxide membrane (SOM) process where the SOEC is used as an inert anode for electrolyzing metal oxides. This talk will discuss the underlying electrochemistry that bind or link my different research activities. |
