Abstract Scope Temperature changes in as-cast plutonium will result in heterogenous strain distributions in the microstructure that arise from the differences in the thermal expansion behavior of the phases; the thermal expansion of α is roughly three times that of δ. Due to the complex, interleaved phase morphology in α+δ Pu, it is not known what micro-mechanical models appropriately describe the thermal strain accommodation and the magnitude of thermal stresses. To this end, absorption contrast tomography and in-situ X-ray scattering during heating and cooling between 10K and 675K was performed at the Advanced Photon Source. A tomography reconstruction is used to instantiate a realistic, fullfield model. In addition, several lower order micromechanical models are developed and the microstructure response of α+δ and the α+δ to α+β transformation are investigated. The models are benchmarked against the lattice parameters collected during in-situ diffraction, revealing the importance of model choice and the thermal phase interactions.
