Abstract Scope |
Ammonia is not only a key feedstock for producing nitrogen fertilizers but also represents an attractive hydrogen energy carrier. The current industrial method for ammonia production from nitrogen and hydrogen relies on the Haber-Bosch process that has high energy cost and carbon emission as well as the requirement for large-scale centralized operation. In this presentation, I will discuss on a new catalytic process for ammonia synthesis from nitrogen and hydrogen in a liquid catalytic system comprising liquid alloy at the bottom and molten salt on the top. The lithium-based liquid alloy, for instance, activates and fixes nitrogen to form the lithium nitride, which can float up and dissolve into the molten salt to react with the H2 spontaneously. Electrical voltage can be applied to enhance the reaction kinetics. This process circumvents the scaling relation and offers unique chemistry and reaction pathways for ammonia synthesis under relatively mild conditions. |
