Abstract Scope |
Advances in process technology, partly driven by the need to address climate change and carbon emissions, have resulted in new calcining and roasting applications involving the use of oxygen and oxy-fuel combustion. This paper discusses two emerging fluidized bed processes, and the technical challenges associated with the use of oxygen and oxy-fuel combustion in these applications. The first example is calcining of calcium carbonate from calcium-based direct air capture (DAC) processes. In this example, oxy-fuel combustion is used to regenerate lime and produce high concentration carbon dioxide for sequestration. The second example involves roasting of sulfide concentrates with higher levels of fluidizing air oxygen enrichment than previously practiced. This is made possible by new sulfuric acid production technology that allows for very high strength sulfur dioxide feed gas. Both examples present interesting new technical challenges in the design of fluidized bed calciners and roasters. |
