Abstract Scope |
The early history of field ion imaging (FIM) and atom probe (AP) is dominated by their inventor: Professor Erwin W. Müller. Most of the seminal work in this field came from his laboratory at the Pennsylvania State University in the 1950s and 1960s. The first human observation of atoms was done by Müller and his student Kanwar Bahadur in 1955. From there APFIM has blossomed into a high speed, high sensitivity, three-dimensional imaging mass spectrometer at the atomic scale. This history will be recounted in the presentation from the earliest concepts to today’s state of the art. The role that these technologies play in materials science and engineering now and in the future will be portrayed. |
