Abstract Scope |
In this study, underwater bead-on-plate laser welding was performed on 10mm STS 304 stainless steel (304SS) plates at different laser powers (2, 4, and 6 kW) to observe the relationship between the microstructure and corrosion. Laser welding was performed by utilizing a self-designed nozzle for local dry underwater laser welding (UWLW). The experiment was conducted at a water depth of 70 mm using a fiber laser. The surface morphologies were observed using an optical microscope (OM) and a radiographic test (RT). The cross-sectional characterization by EBSD-derived parameters such as residual stress, grain boundaries characterization, and grain size were measured in weld area to compared with two different (underwater, in-air) welding conditions.The best weld quality was obtained in both underwater and in-air environments using 2 kW of laser power. |
