Abstract Scope |
Magnetic oxides are of central importance to both high-frequency and power conditioning electronics. Many such oxides are insulating ferrimagnets, characterized by chemically distinct cations with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. In this talk, I will focus on Ni-ferrite (NiFe2O4, or NFO), a ferrimagnetic spinel compound, grown epitaxially on single-crystal substrates with differing lattice mismatch with the NFO film. Relatively high energy photons, either in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) or soft x-ray region, can access specific elemental core levels, permitting us to assess the static contributions of the different cations and even the different lattice symmetry sites (octahedral and tetrahedral). Using pump-probe techniques, we can also track the dynamics of the spins in the different cations across different time scales and frequency ranges. I will discuss the EUV and x-ray spectra of NFO films and present studies of elemental magnetization dynamics at GHz frequencies and ultrafast timescales. |
