Abstract Scope |
The development of clean fusion energy is currently limited by the materials ability to withstand the extreme environment of fusion reactors. In particular, the “shield” component of compact fusion reactors requires the discovery and design of novel materials that can protect sensitive components from high-energy radiation and extreme temperatures produced by the fusion reaction. We have developed a systematic and high throughput method to screen many materials by ranking its shielding performance based on its intrinsic physical and neutronic properties. Our method removes human-bias from the selection process, yielding a set of optimal materials including non-obvious or even counter-intuitive candidates. These are then passed onto more accurate and computationally expensive Monte Carlo calculations to assess their shielding performance. We also demonstrate that the optimal material properties for the shield depend on not only the energy and type of radiation present, but also on the composition of the component being shielded. |
