Abstract Scope |
In vitro biomimicry for the functionalization of organ tissue has become a primary method of researching and combating degenerative ailments such as osteoarthritis and cardiovascular disease. One direction for combating these diseases is to develop devices capable of precisely communicating with and monitoring cells through nanomaterial interfaces. The exploration of integrated biocompatible sensors to monitor confluence, differentiation, morphology and ultimately tissue functionalization within a lab-based setting is one instance where additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping help to create dynamic, repeatable experiments. We demonstrate a timely and cost-effective array of fabrication techniques which can be employed to develop prototypes that satisfy the needs of individual experiments. Our process utilizes direct light processing 3-D printing, inkjet printing with nanoparticle inks, and chemical vapor deposition, yielding a device system capable of delivering, sensing and categorizing state conditions across bio-Nano interfaces useful for characterizing and influencing cellular health during tissue engineering experiments. |
