In this study, we analyzed hydrogen-loaded nickel-plated Zircaloy (NPZ) using in-situ heating stage X-ray diffraction (HS-XRD) to explore the impact of heat treatments on ZrHx phase transformation. NPZ samples with H:Zr=1 were subjected to varied heating and cooling rates, quantitatively measuring phase concentrations in α+γ and α+δ regimes. The data generated a time-temperature-transformation diagram, revealing γ-ZrH phase formation under rapid and moderate cooling conditions. Coupling a mass spectrometer to HS-XRD, we observed hydrogen evolution via thermogravimetric analysis-mass spectroscopy (TGA-MS) coinciding with ZrO2 formation. These experiments provided novel insights into hydride material hydrogen evolution. Further in-situ measurements of hydride formation in hydrogen or deuterium atmospheres will enhance understanding of phase formation mechanisms under reactor conditions. We aim to develop an in-situ X-ray diffraction method with a gas flow cell to monitor NPZ hydriding and understand transient artifacts. Additional characterization techniques include SEM, EBSD, TGA-MS, STEM, and EELS. |
