Abstract Scope Additive manufacturing may enable the implementation of novel ceramic composite architectures. However, multi-material 3D printing is proving challenging and time-consuming. In this presentation we will discuss a printing approach based on the continuous micro-extrusion of filaments. This discussion will be based on the comparison of two model systems: i) the extrusion of filaments with ceramic core and shell separated by weak interlayers designed to create a network that directs crack propagation, promoting crack twisting and tilting and increase fracture resistance and ii) the extrusion of pastes containing ceramic fibres (0.5-1 mm in length). The conditions for co-extrusion using a single nozzle with diameters ranging between 100-1000 microns and for fibre alignment will be discussed. The mechanical properties of the materials (strength and fracture resistance) will be linked to their microstructure through the combination of ex-situ and in situ testing in the scanning electron microscope at micro to macro scales.
