Abstract Scope |
By integrating X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques, analysis that provides qualitative and quantitative insights into an unknown sample’s elemental and phase composition is achievable. In our study, we standardized a method for calibrating the fluorescence detector in the combined XRF-XRD setup on beamline 2-1 at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource for three first-row transition metals: manganese, nickel, and zinc. This method includes three phases: standard mixture preparation, data collection, and creation of calibration curves. In the first phase, we made mixtures of the transition-metal oxides with a silica matrix at five different concentrations. We then loaded these mixtures into capillaries and collected XRF and XRD data simultaneously. Next, we processed and analyzed the XRF data to create plots of intensity versus concentration to inform future quantifications of these elements. Using three samples of unknown composition, we tested our method, which produced absolute errors less than 1 wt%. |
