Abstract Scope Microstructural evolutions during the pretreatments on spent NdFeB magnets were investigated. The pretreatments such as hydrogenation and thermal oxidation are needed for selective leaching because phases such as Nd2O3 and Fe2O3 should be controlled based on a Pourbaix diagram of Fe-H2O and Nd-H2O system. Our previous results showed that the controlled phases resulted in the good selectivity. In addition, the microstructural factor like the size of the Nd oxide gave an impact on the leaching rate. So, it is needed to characterize how the microstructure of the NdFeB magnets is affected and manipulated during the pretreatments. In this study, microstructural evolutions were analyzed during the pretreatments, where the hydrogenation and subsequent thermal oxidation processes were applied.
