Abstract Scope |
Aluminum (Al) alloys are indispensable structural materials. The challenge lies in enhancing their multifunctional capabilities such as localized magnetic properties, corrosion resistance, and mechanical strength while keeping costs manageable. Friction stir-based processing and extrusion (FSP/E) emerged as an efficient solid-state metalworking technique, leveraging localized plastic deformation to create fine-grained microstructures and highly refined metallic composites.
Our focus is on studying the multifunctional properties of recycled Al alloys infused with hard magnetic SmCo5 powders using FSP/E. Through careful control of the concentration and distribution of magnetic particles, we fabricated a material that exhibits both permanent magnetic properties and improved mechanical characteristics within the paramagnetic Al matrix. Our investigation extensively delves into the microstructural changes and shear-induced particle comminution using a range of characterization tools to understand the interfacial and phase structure at multiple length-scales. |
