Abstract Scope |
The exploration and eventual colonization of celestial bodies such as Mars and the Moon have sparked significant interest in utilizing the local resources available on these extraterrestrial surfaces. In this study, we investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties of molded Martian and Lunar regolith simulant compressed pellet samples, to gain insights into their potential applicability as construction materials. The regolith simulants were used to fabricate cylindrical samples through a compression process, resulting in compacted pellets. Varying amounts of pressure were applied during the initial forming of the samples, enabling a comparative analysis of the effects of pressure on their mechanical behavior. The mechanical properties of the samples were measured, including compressive modulus, compressive strength, and digital image correlation (DIC) techniques were also used to observe strain behavior during failure. The examination of the microstructure of the compressed regolith pellets was also a crucial aspect of this research. |
