Abstract Scope |
The industrial processes for extraction of niobium and tantalum oxides are highly dependent on hydrofluoric acid. This work focuses on developing an alternative fluoride-free approach based on alkali treatment and solvent extraction. The application of microwaves in thermal treatment with potassium hydroxide shows positive outcomes of rapid processing with a high reaction rate and recovery. The microwave alkali treatment produces a water-soluble complex of niobium and tantalum separated in a downstream solvent extraction circuit using methyltrioctylammonium chloride as an extractant. Finally, niobium oxide and tantalum-rich mixed oxide with >98% purity were prepared after precipitation of purified solution. |
