Abstract Scope Traditionally-mined Jamaican bauxites are gibbsitic, hematite-rich and contain low phosphorus and metal impurity concentrations. As supplies of these ores diminish, high-goethite bauxites with lower available gibbsite and higher phosphorus and metal concentrations will replace them. This paper compares the total and low temperature caustic soluble concentrations of Mn, Cu and Cd in bauxites from both mining areas. Ores from each mine were characterized (XRF and XRD), digested under low temperature conditions and concentrations of Mn, Cu and Cd were then measured using atomic absorption spectroscopy. Total Mn concentrations in the new mine (0.035 – 3.2 %) exceeded those of traditional ores (0.135 – 2.63 %) and the amounts extracted during low temperature digestion were higher as well. Although variable, similar trends were observed for total and soluble Cu and Cd. Predicting caustic soluble metal impurities from Jamaica’s goethitic bauxite is critical in order to meet current smelter-grade alumina quality requirements.
