Abstract Scope |
In the Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) additive manufacturing process, many types of defects can form that affect the build quality, mechanical integrity, and qualification of real components. In this talk, we present the in situ defect detection capability of a recently developed multi-channel, high-speed, on-axis pyrometer. The pyrometer offers both high spatial and temporal resolution (~100 microns, and 100+ kHz), and is shown to robustly detect process changes that affect the thermal emissions of the melt pool. This talk demonstrates the sensor’s ability to detect build anomalies such as chemical contamination, laser parameter drift, build pauses, and powder short feeding. Future applications of this sensor are also discussed. |
