Abstract Scope |
Antiferroelectric (AFE) ceramics undergo a first-order structural phase transition under an applied electric field. During this abrupt transition, the lack of “lattice compatibility” between AFE and Ferroelectric (FE) crystalline regions results in electric hysteresis. Thereof AFE ceramics have poor service life (< 1x106 cycles to failure) and mediocre energy efficiency (<80%). To address the root cause, over 500 compositions were synthesized guided by density-functional theory minimizing the strain using universal geometric compatibility theory. The generated library of bulk ceramics identified the ceramics compositions having energy efficiency higher than 95% while maintaining the stored energy density at (or above) 3 J/cm3. We further expanded our search in this region and achieved bulk ceramics demonstrating ultra-slim polarization-electric field (P~E) loops with an ultra-high efficiency of 98%. The capacitor of this composition reached a current record lifetime of 0.8X108 cycles with only an 8% loss in stored energy density. |
