Abstract Scope |
We developed and optimized a novel friction-based self-piercing riveting (F-SPR) process for 3T configuration of 7xxx-7xxx-6xxx for future lightweight intensive vehicle applications to aim for decarbonization. F-SPR generates the frictional heat to temporarily and locally soften the material during the process without additional preheating steps or auxiliary heating devices, enabling the joining of low-ductility materials without a cracking issue. In addition, this process promotes a solid-state joining between the materials and between the rivet and surrounding materials. We correlated the joint formation with key joining process parameters including rotational speed, plunge force, plunge depth, and rivet hardness. The results demonstrated that F-SPR successfully achieved both mechanical interlocking and solid-state joints without cracking. Joint integrities were assessed by mechanical testing, showing good mechanical joint strength. |
