Abstract Scope |
Eddy current testing is a popular non-destructive evaluation method for identifying flaws in conductive media. Traditionally, it has seen use in bulk characterization methods in the oil and gas, aerospace, biomedical industries, etc. X-ray computed Tomography (XCT) scanning has been the de facto method to scan manufactured parts to identify internal features and defects without resorting to destructive exploratory methods. The XCT process can take a long time to yield a single reconstructed image which can cause research and production bottlenecks. To remedy this shortcoming of X-ray physics, the authors propose a novel magnetic CT system which can scan parts in around 2 minutes. The system consists of a driven magnetic coil and a detector which are on either side of the part to be imaged. For this prototype, the detector is moved along a grid to simulate a full-size detector and attenuation of the incident field is measured. |
