Abstract Scope |
The high strength of maraging steels arises due to the growth of precipitates when the initial martensite state is heat treated. In addition, heat treatment also results in the concurrent growth of reversed austenite phase by a diffusional process. In this study, we develop a phase field model to study the decomposition of martensite by taking into account the growth of precipitates as well as reverted austenite. The model takes into account phase transformation-induced elastic and plastic deformations. We model 18Ni M300 maraging steel, using a ternary Fe-Ni-Ti model that is parameterized by using the thermodynamic and kinetic data of the alloy. The simulation data is used to estimate the variation of yield strength as a function of temperature and ageing time. The model also brings out the importance of reverted austenite phase on the evolution of the strength during the heat treatment at higher temperatures. |
