Abstract Scope |
The performance of bearing steels is influenced by the presence of retained austenite in the microstructure, and it can either extend the rolling contact fatigue life or lead to dimensional instability due to deformation-induced martensitic transformation during service. It is thus important to control the retained austenite stability in bearing steels. In this work, various microstructures with different fractions and compositions of retained austenite were produced, and the thermal stability was assessed using scanning electron microscopy imaging, electron backscatter diffraction and dilatometry. Additionally, the impact of external loading on the mechanical stability was studied by conducting Brinell hardness testing. The experimental work was supplemented with thermodynamic, kinetic and finite element simulations. |
