Abstract Scope |
Adiabatic blanking uses high speeds of the tools to utilize strain localization, incorporating thermal softening, to produce blanked edges with a high surface quality. A numerical model is used to analyze the material behavior in the vicinity of the blanked edge and is correlated with the local evolution of the microstructure. In this paper, carbon steel C75 with two different heat treatments, i.e. soft state after smoothing rolling and fully quenched state, are characterized under various temperatures. The strain rate sensitivity for the two states differs resulting in different localization behavior. The analysis of the blanked edge reveals the pronounced adiabatic shear bands in the fully quenched state, while the localization zone is more diffuse for the softer state. The model predictions in combination with microstructural analysis of deformation and fracture modes help to estimate the width of the localization zone. |
