Abstract Scope |
Energy efficiency is a primary objective in industrial processes nowadays. Roll forming represents a well-established and widespread technology in mass production. In this process, a sheet metal is conveyed by frictional contact with the roller tools. The varying roll diameter along the sheet contact line entails different peripheral speeds with decelerating sections leading to undesirable increases of drive torques. This paper introduces a numerical model for the description of tribological behavior. Different friction conditions are investigated locally for each forming step to quantify effects on resulting drive torques. From the findings, an industrial roll forming line is equipped with efficiency-enhancing strategies based on target-oriented gap adjustment and decoupling of roll segments. By using a combination of the determined measures, optimized slip conditions were achieved. The optimum is confirmed by results from torque monitoring. As a result, the overall current consumption as an indicator for the energy demand can be reduced. |
