Abstract Scope |
This study introduces a new class of composite materials with a metal matrix using a solid-state shear-based manufacturing technique. Traditional high-temperature methods like sintering often produce unwanted reaction products, compromising functionality. Our approach employs high-speed shearing through solid stir extrusion, combining mechanical stress, chemical potential, and thermal activation to fracture and uniformly distribute precursor additive particles within the metal matrix. Additives such as magnetic particles, graphitic particles, carbides, and other intermetallics have been demonstrated to functionalize the matrix using our technique. The resulting composite features a refined microstructure with enhanced mechanical strength. This study demonstrates the composites' potential for structural along with magnetic, thermal, electrical, and refractory applications in aerospace, nuclear, and automotive sectors. |
