Presentation Title Sustainable Steelmaking: A Case of NIST's Vision for Sustainable Manufacturing
Author(s) Fan Zhang
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Fan Zhang
Abstract Scope Sustainable manufacturing, highlighted by the 2022 National Strategy for Advanced Manufacturing, creates products through economically sound processes that minimize environmental impacts and conserve resources. It is crucial for achieving environmental stewardship and economic growth in a competitive international market. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, promotes U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology. As the national metrology institute, NIST supports the adoption of sustainable manufacturing practices across industries. In this talk, we will present NIST’s vision for sustainable manufacturing, focusing on the development of sustainable materials and processing technologies. Using sustainable steelmaking as an example, we will highlight the impact of NIST’s physical and chemical analysis tools developed in partnership with the Department of Energy’s national laboratories. We welcome dialogue with our stakeholders to refine our strategy and support U.S. industry.
