We investigated the thermal history, crystalline phase evolution, and microstructure of ceramic composite 50wt.% hydroxyapatite and 50wt.% zirconia (HZ) during Flash Sintering (FS) and Conventional Sintering (CS). For that, we employed high acquisition rate in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis during both sintering methods. The Pt-standard method revealed that CS and FS went similar temperatures (1400ºC and 1370ºC, respectively). Intriguingly, zirconia was completely converted from the tetragonal-to-cubic phase, and HAp was completely changed to α-TCP after FS. On the other hand, the CSed sample presented no phase conversion for zirconia, and most HAp remained steady. Needle structures were observed in microstructure of FSed sample (suggesting directional crystalline growth), which was not detected in their conventional sintered counterparts. Thus, these results suggest that the electric field applied during FS results in athermal effects for HZ composite, since both FS and CS samples reached similar temperatures, but showed different microstructure and phase transformation. |
